Gather beneath the Maui sky for an evening woven from ancient voyages, living music, and the warmth of true aloha — a celebration of Hawaiʻi as told by the family who calls these islands home.
Our show chronicles an epic voyage across the Pacific — the journey of the wayfinders who crossed thousands of miles of open ocean guided only by the stars, the currents, and the wisdom of their ancestors.
That story unfolds before you through graceful hula, mesmerizing fire poi, and the breathtaking artistry of Samoan fire-knife dancing, where steel and flame move as one.
Hawaiian Cultural Experts & the ʻOhana Behind the Show
In 2006, Kaniala and Melody married and began their family. In 2009, they moved from Hilo to Maui to pursue Kaniala's music career. Unsure where to begin, they took a walk through Kaʻanapali, seeking venues with live hula and music. Kaniala soon began performing at the Kaʻanapali Beach Hotel and Hula Grill Kaʻanapali, and was introduced to the wedding industry, where couples from around the world admired his music.
Melody and their children often joined him, performing as hula dancers. From an early age, their children embraced hula, joining their parents in as many performances as possible.
"The voices of our ancestors are ringing, telling us stories of old Hawaiʻi. You can feel it in the wind, hear it in the rain, hear it in the beat of the pahu. Ke Kani Malie is our canoe. Our dancers will guide us as a family through this cultural journey."
— Melody Maila Masoe
This chant, written by Kaniala, embodies who they are as a family of performers and reflects their vision as they look toward the future. Like voyagers paddling a canoe, Kani and Mel have created a vessel through which audiences can experience the essence of Hawaiʻi.
